EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, commonly known as EMDR, is a structured psychotherapy that helps people process and recover from distressing life experiences, trauma and difficult memories.

EMDR is recognised as having a strong research base for the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), including recognition by the Australian Psychological Society. It has also been used by trained clinicians to support people experiencing anxiety, depression, phobias, grief, addictions, body image concerns and other mental health difficulties.

Artemis Psychology now offers online EMDR therapy, allowing clients to access support in a safe, flexible and professional setting.

EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess distressing memories so they become less overwhelming and less disruptive in everyday life.

How EMDR Can Help

When someone experiences trauma or a disturbing event, the brain’s natural information processing system can become blocked. This can leave memories, emotions and body sensations feeling intense, unresolved or easily triggered.

EMDR therapy helps activate the brain’s natural healing processes. Using carefully structured protocols, a trained clinician supports the client to process difficult experiences in a way that reduces emotional distress and supports recovery.

Just as the body works to heal from a physical wound, the mind can also move toward healing when the right support and conditions are in place.
