EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

EMDR is a structured psychological therapy that helps people work through distressing memories and their impact on everyday life. It is an evidence-based treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

At Artemis Psychology Services, Cynthia will discuss your needs and whether EMDR is an appropriate part of your treatment. Online EMDR appointments are also available.

What Is EMDR?

After a distressing experience, reminders of what happened can bring back strong emotions, thoughts or physical sensations. EMDR aims to reduce the distress associated with these memories.

During memory processing, you focus briefly on an agreed memory while following a back-and-forth movement or sound. The aim is for the memory to become less upsetting, rather than to erase what happened.

What Happens in Therapy?

EMDR involves assessment and preparation as well as memory processing.

  1. Understanding your needs: Discuss your history, current concerns and goals, and consider whether EMDR is suitable.
  2. Preparing together: Learn coping strategies and discuss your readiness before working with difficult memories.
  3. Processing memories: Work with an agreed memory using guided back-and-forth stimulation, with regular opportunities to check in.
  4. Reviewing progress: Consider changes in your symptoms and what further support is needed.

When May EMDR Be Helpful?

EMDR has a strong evidence base for treating PTSD. It may also be considered as part of an individual treatment plan for distress linked to difficult life experiences.

The existing concerns you bring to therapy might include anxiety, low mood, grief or upsetting memories. Whether EMDR is appropriate depends on a clinical assessment; the evidence is not equally established for every condition.

Cynthia can discuss the available approaches and how they relate to your circumstances.

Working at a Pace You Can Manage

Working with difficult memories can bring up strong feelings. Preparation and ongoing discussion are part of the process. Let Cynthia know if you feel overwhelmed or need to pause.

Online EMDR at Artemis

Artemis offers online EMDR therapy, providing another way to access support. Cynthia will discuss whether online sessions are suitable for your needs and explain how the appointments will work before treatment begins.

You can ask questions about the process, what you will need for an online appointment and how support will be managed during sessions.
